investigation on the influence of environmental ageing on strength and fatigue behavior of different single lap joints
Abstract
Investigation of performance of CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) and aluminum specimens is crucial, and there is a need to develop a mechanical function prediction methodology. However, there is a shortage of research on the effect of static and fatigue strength of adhesive, mechanical, and hybrid joints on environmentally aged specimens. This study aims to investigate the impacts of thermal and hygrothermal aging on fatigue and static performance under three-point bending. Three groups of samples were tested: unaged samples, thermal aging samples, and hygrothermal aging samples. The strength of three types of Single-Lap Joints (SLJ) (Aluminum-to-Aluminum, Composite-to-Composite, and Aluminum-to-Composite) was tested for three different joints (bonded, bolted, and bonded/bolted). The static tests reveal that bonded/bolted Composite-to-Composite specimens have the highest strength and that thermal and hygrothermal conditions significantly affect the static performance of the three types of substrates and joints. Under fatigue load, bonded, bolted, and bonded/bolted specimens show the highest fatigue life for ATA (Aluminum-to-Aluminum), ATC (Aluminum-to-Composite), and CTC (Composite-to-Composite), respectively.Additionally, the study demonstrated that ageing and static load percent can reduce the fatigue life.
