Immigration is a complex issue that impacts our economy, culture, national security, and labor force, shaping who we will become as a nation.

We must carefully regulate the number of immigrants and establish rigorous standards for selection. Without this, immigration may not only fail to benefit the country but could also introduce destabilizing forces that threaten our nation. History provides lessons: the fall of ancient Rome and the ongoing crises in Europe serve as urgent warnings.

Having volunteered in immigrant communities for eight years, I’ve seen firsthand how a lack of thorough vetting can burden American society and pose risks to national security.

Immigration policy should prioritize protecting immigrants already living here and preserving the quality of life they experienced upon arrival. Allowing unqualified immigrants or failing to conduct thorough background checks on newcomers can place earlier immigrants in difficult and unfair situations. Moreover, we must address the challenges posed by foreign adversary infiltration, which threatens the freedoms we value in the U.S. It’s crucial to ensure immigration policies are both fair and secure.

In the 21st century, the competition for science and technology is critical. While the U.S. relied on 72% foreign graduate students in computer science (2019 data) and 74% of Silicon Valley’s engineers were foreign-born (2014 data, likely even higher now), China primarily employs its own citizens for STEM roles. From a national defense perspective, which country inherently has stronger security?
