Matt Hussey, editorial director of NEAR Protocol (and former editor-in-chief of Decrypt) responded to the news of the Telegram group with “#meIRL.” Deputy District Judge Peter Hui sentenced computer technician Ng Man-ho on Thursday, a month after the 27-year-old, who ran a Telegram group called SUCK Channel, was found guilty of seven charges of conspiring to incite others to commit illegal acts during the 2019 extradition bill protests and subsequent months. Over 33,000 people sent out over 1,000 doxxing messages in the group. Although the administrators tried to delete all of the messages, the posting speed was far too much for them to keep up. On Tuesday, some local media outlets included Sing Tao Daily cited sources as saying the Hong Kong government was considering restricting access to Telegram. Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data Ada Chung told to the Legislative Council on Monday that government officials, police and lawmakers remain the targets of “doxxing” despite a privacy law amendment last year that criminalised the malicious disclosure of personal information. Other crimes that the SUCK Channel incited under Ng’s watch included using corrosive chemicals to make explosives and causing grievous bodily harm with intent. The court also found Ng responsible for calling on people to assist protesters who clashed violently with police at several universities in November 2019.
