Advice: When you do a fresh Windows install, increase your EFI size

The default EFI size set by Windows is 100mb, and for some Windows or Vantage updates that's too small and can be problematic.

In my case I couldn't do any BIOS updates, even manually it wasn't possible.

Microsoft knows this issue, despite that they still couldn't change the default size. Instead, on running systems they suggest to delete font files saved in the EFI to squeeze out some storage.

On Lenovo factory images the default is 260mb.

Some even say it should be 400mb, 512mb or even 1024mb. But I think I've read somewhere that in some cases bigger than 260mb can be problematic too, and since Lenovos default is also 260mb, I just picked that size to be safe.

It should be more than enough anyways. It can be set during the installation with CMD diskpart tool. Or if you don't need Windows, simply switch to Linux.

Asking for new linux laptop recommendations!

Hello everyone and a happy new year!

For the last 7 years, I used my 14' e480 (8/256).
I also, some time ago, replaced ram (32 gb) and added sata ssd for it.
It is still quite good and enough for me, but I'm a little tired of it, and I decided to buy a new laptop and give this one to my mom :)

I like reliability (some really bad falls) and keyboard of this laptop (yes, it's lenovo, but I still really like it), so I'm thinking about another thinkpad

My main use cases are browsing and vscode with ssh.
I also used linux almost all my life, so I don't want to use macos (I tried a macbook at work some time ago and didn't like it) and windows (same)

I'm really interested in such things:
1) good linux experience, so arm laptops maybe are a bad option?
2) lightweight, so 13-14 screens would be enough
3) cold as possible, I think I had trauma with my work dell laptop, which died because it overheated
4) good battery life is always good, ofc, but I'm ok to be a protosaber user :)
5) I also don't need a non-integrated (discrete) gpu

Cheapest thinkpad I could buy in 2025 for online teaching?

Guys, I teach online and I’m urgently needing a cheap laptop to get through this first half of the year.

I currently own a Lenovo Ideapad 330. It has lots of storage but the Ram is 4g and also the processor is Intel Celeron N4000 which probably is crap (though I know nothing about tech).

So when I’m in the middle of teaching a lesson, I get glitches and my computer starts crashing. It’s so slow when I start using my camera or sharing screen :(. And of course it will affect me negatively with my students.

Online teaching is my only possible income, so I would like an emergency lenovo thinkpad that will work fine in video calls, streaming videos, sharing screen etc etc and, that possibly lasts me at least six months, because I plan on buying a newer model when I have saved enough.

My budget would be 250€ euros or less (could increase it to 300€ euros if needed, but I would like to save as much money as I can).

Please help, I need to buy it asap! Glad to hear your recommendations.

Got my P14s Gen 5 Intel version

Hi, got my upgrade from T470. Haven't pushed hard yet, so not ready yet to share my impressions about performance. Seems that Davinci Resolve works ok, graphics acceleration seems to work, 4k preview with several effects works smoothly.

Nice thing, that it is not as bulky as I expected, screen is much better than I had on my T470 (in P14s I've got 4k), did some photo editing, it looks as good as my desktop monitor (Dell ultrasharp).

Keyboard does not feel as good as T470, although I'm not a keyboard freak, so I did not expected to feel any difference, but new one has plastic feeling, my be out is just different and still need to get used to it.

When fans are working is it's way lauder machine than T470 was, I've tried to enable high performance mode and it made fan to spin constantly and that was laud, so switched back to balanced mode for now.

I've missed SD card reader several times, and have no idea why it was removed - it's probably a $5 addition to cost and seems that there is some space for it too.

IR camera login send like a nice addition after T470, works well enough even in quite dark room.

I liked T470 chassis material better, even if it was hard to clean and my dog was able to scratch it easily, the current one on P15s is fingerprint magnet. As long as daughter has E14 with similar cover material, I think it will scratch as easy as E14.

Biggest problem so far - can't find a way to run it on power delivery from Dell monitor. T470 was running on it without a problem. As far as I understand, Dell monitor is not delivering enough watts (according to specs it can deliver up to 90w, should be more than enough for light workloads), hence is ignored - anyone knows if that can be solved?

If anyone has any questions regarding machine, give me know.

Is there an ultrabase for the T520?

I love the idea of adding a ton of ports and functionality to my laptop at the cost of portability, and the ultrabase looks really cool. One problem: every time I look up whether there's one for my model or not, I just get listing for desk docks, ultrabases for other models, or some random lenovo link that's not at all relevant. Nothing that specifically says no, but no confirmation either. All I want to know is if I can buy a plug-and-play laptop accessory that clips onto the bottom of my laptop and gives me extra ports and maybe another ultrabay slot.
Additional questions I've failed to find answers for:
Is there a t520 ultrabay compatible blu-ray drive?
Is there a Slice Battery/extra large battery available for the t520?
I'm no pro at Google searching, but I've searched the above queries along with many variations on them multiple times only to get hit with a wall of irrelevant articles and ads for things that won't work.

Is the Lenovo ThinkPad T480 still good enough in 2025?

I’m considering buying a Lenovo **ThinkPad T480** with **32 GB of RAM** and an **Intel i5 8th Gen processor** for **320 €**. My main use would be to program when I’m not at home.

# Typical Workload

* **Android Studio**
* **IntelliJ IDEA**
* **Virtual Machines**
* **Front-end development**

In general JetBrains IDE's. And Java, Kotlin, React...

I plan to use **Linux** as the operating system and need to know if the T480 will perform well for:

1. Running large IDEs like Android Studio and IntelliJ.
2. Compiling and debugging medium-to-large projects.
3. Running virtual machines alongside other tasks.
4. General programming tasks without noticeable slowdowns or lag.

My concerns are:

* **Performance**: Will the i5 8th Gen be a bottleneck for more intensive tasks like Android Studio and virtual machines?
* **Display Quality**: Will the display be suitable for extended programming sessions?
* **Battery Life**: How does the battery hold up in 2025, and can it handle a few hours on Linux without being plugged in?
* **Futureproofing**: Is this setup (32 GB RAM + i5) still a viable choice for programming in 2025, especially for large projects or resource-heavy tools?

# Additional Context

At home, I have a desktop with the following specs, which works perfectly for my needs:

* **Intel i5-9400F CPU** (6 cores)
* **16 GB RAM**
* **512 GB SSD**

Will the T480 be a good complement to my desktop for when I need portability, or will I notice a significant drop in performance?

What’s the deal with t480 external batteries?

I ordered a t480 and it arrives tomorrow, but I was watching videos and one mentioned the external battery and showed it. It looks like the one I ordered doesn’t have that. Do certain versions of the t480 have it or how does that work?
