Everyone told me I should buy a laptop rather than a tablet. That would be more convenient.

Lessons from dealing with computrace on used thinkpads

Lots of companies retire their laptops by pulling/wiping the storage, removing the serial number from inventory, and then passing the laptop on to a recycler. The "removed from inventory" step usually (not always) includes telling Computrace "this isn't our laptop anymore."

But! The recycler isn't going to install storage and an OS and boot the laptop up. They just list it for sale, either as "untested" or as "boots to bios". Which means the laptop's computrace never has a chance to phone home and learn that it was supposed to delete itself.

So: the lesson I have learned is, before picking up the phone and spending time on hold talking to the people at Absolute Software, try throwing Windows on the machine, taking it online, and seeing if Computrace will be nice enough to just go away after a few hours.

Step by step, what I now do when I discover computrace on something I've bought:

1. Regardless of what OS I plan to use, install windows 10 (the minimum required for today's computrace client).

2. Disable updates for 1 week (updates can interfere with the self-deletion process). Disable sleep (it can't phone home if the laptop is asleep).

3. Go online, let it sit there at idle for an hour or two (this gives the computrace stub that the BIOS injects time to download and install the full client).

4. Reboot, let it sit at idle several more hours (this gives it time to phone home, learn that it's supposed to die, and self-delete).

5. Reboot, enter bios, and see if Computrace is still enabled. Often it's gone. If it isn't, I sigh, call Absolute, and do the "wait on hold, talk to a human, ask for help" thing.
