I am reviewing academic job applications at the moment, and the amount of bullshit this year is phenomenal. Never saw that much. The other troubling factor is that a large number of cover letters follow the same structure, with the same idiosyncracies.

Which brings me to large language models. Please, do not write your job application with an LLM or chatbot. Language models learn statistical patterns in job applications, and will generate sounding letters. Sadly, the generated text is incoherent with your CV, lists classes that don't exist in your degree, and makes up skills you don't have.

The final troubling factor you won't notice is ‘mode collapse.’ Language models tend to generate similar structures for every users, leading to 10s of applications with similar sentences, structures, or expressions. Immediate red flag that makes panel members more suspicious of your application.

The few applications that make it are all simple, they list factual elements with plenty of details that explain qualification, skills, and experience. No bullshit, just evidence for the panel to decide if you match essential or desirable criteria.

From my experience, there are many beneficial applications of language models, but writing an academic job application is not one at present.«

In the “Bear Market Screaming Therapy Group” on Telegram, members are only allowed to post voice notes of themselves screaming. Anything else will result in an instant ban from the group, which currently has about 75 members. To view your bio, click the Menu icon and select “View channel info.” Clear When choosing the right name for your Telegram channel, use the language of your target audience. The name must sum up the essence of your channel in 1-3 words. If you’re planning to expand your Telegram audience, it makes sense to incorporate keywords into your name. As of Thursday, the SUCK Channel had 34,146 subscribers, with only one message dated August 28, 2020. It was an announcement stating that police had removed all posts on the channel because its content “contravenes the laws of Hong Kong.”
