قال النبي ﷺ {صِيَامُ يَوْمِ عَاشُورَاءَ أَحْتَسِبُ عَلَى اللَّهِ أَنْ يُكَفِّرَ السَّنَةَ الَّتِي قَبْلَهُ "}رواه مسلم 1162.

وقد ذكر ابن القيم في كتابه زاد المعاد وابن حجر في كتابه فتح الباري أنَّ صيام عاشوراء ثلاث مراتب: 1- صوم التاسع والعاشر والحادي عشر وهذا أكملها. 2- صوم التاسع والعاشر، وعليه أكثر الأحاديث. 3- صوم العاشر وحده.
