فمرت الجارية، فقرأت البيت، فأطلعت الخليفة عليه، فغضب الخليفة، وأمر بإحضار أبا نواس، وكان مختبئًا وراء الباب، فمسح العينين اللتين في لفظة "ضاع"، وأحضر بين يديه، فقال له ما كتبت على الباب؟ قال: كتبت: لقد ضاء شعري على بابكم كما ضاء درٌّ على خالصة.
فأعجبه ذلك، وأنعم عليه، فخرج أبو نواس وهو يقول: "لله درك من شعر قُلِعت عيناهُ فأبصر."
