معلم اول، ارسطوی حکیم، در یونانی Ἀριστοτέλης و در انگلیسی Aristotle خوانده می‌شود. ارسطو شکل کوتاه‌شدهٔ نام او است. در فرهنگ اسلامی قبلاً شکل‌های گسترده‌تر این نام هم به کار می‌رفته، مثلاً کِندی رساله‌ای دارد موسوم به «في کَمّیّة کُتُب أرِسطوطالیس.» لغتنامهٔ دهخدا اشکال مختلف این نام را آورده و تلفظ آن را هم به صورت اَرِسطو ضبط کرده. ارِسطو به تلفظ مبدأ نزدیک‌تر است. این نام اصالتاً یعنی بهترین هدف: ἄριστος (aristos) = بهترین و τέλος (telos) = هدف، غایت.
