♦️Cocaine sharks. (Adapted news for pre-intermediate english students). Audio.
Scientists have found cocaine in sharks near Brazil. They tested 13 Brazilian sharpnose sharks from near Rio de Janeiro. The sharks had high levels of cocaine in their muscles and livers, much higher than other sea animals.
The Oswaldo Cruz Foundation did this research, and it is the first time cocaine has been found in sharks. Experts think cocaine enters the ocean from illegal drug labs or through the waste of drug users. Some cocaine packs lost at sea could also be a source, but this is less likely.
Sara Novais, a scientist, said these findings are important and concerning. All the female sharks tested were pregnant, but it is not clear how cocaine affects the baby sharks.
More research is needed to see if cocaine changes how sharks behave, but past studies suggest drugs can affect animals like they do humans..
