Last Update:
Military correspondent Doron Kadosh publishes the full details of the incident in which the two reserve soldiers from Battalion 7107, the Nahal Engineering Battalion, were killed:
1. The fighters were directly hit by the collapse of the building they were staying in, in the Shaboura RC in Rafah, where Battalion 931 is currently operating. The building collapsed yesterday around 5:00 PM.
2. The circumstances of the collapse of the building are still being investigated, but the IDF says that it was a dilapidated structure. It was an old building, and it appears that one of the main reasons for its collapse was the frequent use of tanks and armored personnel carriers in the same area, which weakened the structure even more. Apparently, the building was not attacked by the Air Force in the past. The IDF also operated in the same building in the past, and as can be seen in all the documentation published from Rafah - there is hardly a single building left there that is not destroyed.
3. Inside the collapsed building were 4 fighters - two of whom were quickly rescued with moderate difficulty, and were safely evacuated to a hospital by a helicopter that landed inside the Gaza Strip in the area of the Philadelphi axis. The other two fighters, who were killed, were trapped in the rubble.
4. The rescue operations lasted for many hours - from 5:00 PM yesterday until early this morning, about 12 hours. Forces from the Home Front Command's rescue brigade operated at the scene. The two fighters were rescued lifeless - and all that remained was to declare their death.
