这幅画的寓意是权力的种种罪恶,表现了罪恶如何从大人物的手中像链子那样一环扣一环往下传到小人物身上。人在被人抓住的同时也抓住了别人。假如权力是一声呼喊的话,那么人的一生就活在别人交换的回声之中。强者的回声会震聋无助者的耳膜。但是还有一个细节值得注意:达西万斯把这个链子画成了一个圆圈。女奴镜子姑娘的左手手腕被她的主人小公主紧紧抓着,而她的右手呢却抓住了汉扎塔贝古姆的左手手腕。这三个不幸的人站成了一圈,通过这个圆圈画家就暗示抓握或者说权力的效仿也可以是反向的。女奴有时候可以监禁皇家公主。历史可能既往上又往下伸出它的爪子。强者的耳膜也可能被弱者的呼喊声震聋。
