In 1960-61, Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni designed the interior of the Splügen Bräu beer restaurant in Milan described by a critic who attended the opening as follows: “It opened in 1961 with a reception attended by wealthy Milanese and elegant ladies. Very particular and very sophisticated neo-liberty furniture was created by the Castiglioni brothers: the tables are placed on various levels and you sit on sofas that very much recall those in railway carriages… Prices are high, the atmosphere is bourgeois with some intellectuals.” The brothers were also responsible for all the furnishings; some of them would later be commercially available such as this famous pendant by Flos, bar stool by Zanotta, and beer glass and bottle opener by Alessi.
