Mid-Century, More Than

Since we touched upon Bauhaus, Joost Schmidt, and - yesterday - the concept of Gesamtkunstwerk, which can be translated as “a complete work of art”, one of the foundations of early modernism popularized by multiple important figures, from Richard Wagner to Walter Gropius, let us take a quick look at one of such Gesamtkunstwerks made possible thanks to a private commission Gropius, director of Bauhaus, received from Adolf Sommerfeld and completed together with Adolf Meyer in early 1920s.

This was the famous wooden Sommerfeld’s House built with the help of many of Bauhaus’ students who designed everything, from curtains (Dörte Helm), to wooden tables and chairs (Marcel Breuer), to stained glass windows (Josef Albers), to interior paint colors (Hinnerk Schneper).

Раз уж мы заговорили о Йосте Шмитде, «Баухаусе» и упомянутой вчера концепции «гезамткунстверк», то есть цельного произведения искусства, которая занимала умы многих деятелей искусства с конца 19-го века, от композитора Рихарда Вагнера до, собственно, Вальтера Гропиуса, то имеет смысл взглянуть на один проект, в котором удалось реализовать эту концепцию.

Речь идёт о деревянном доме Адольфа Соммерфельда, построенном в 1921 году Вальтером Гропиусом совместно с Адольфом Майером, а также студентами «Баухауса», которые, собственно, разработали внутреннее оснащение дома, начиная от портьер (Дёрте Хельм), витражей (Йозеф Альберс) и деревянной мебели (Марсель Брёйер) вплоть до цветовой схемы интерьера (Хиннерк Шнепер).
