In 1955, Fiat released a mass-produced car, the Fiat 600. Designed by Dante Giacosa, the car was affordable and immediately became a hit. But Giacosa continued his quest for a car that would cater to the needs of the masses and as early as January, 1956, amidst the Italian baby boom, came up with the 600 Multipla that was based on the Fiat 600 and became the first ever multi-purpose vehicle. The Multipla could seat a big family, transport bulky goods, and, with the rear seats folded down, be used as a double-bed camping van.
