Here are a few pictures by Ormond Gigli (1925-2019), an acclaimed fashion and advertising photographer from NYC. Gigli’s career-changing commission came in 1952 when a LIFE editor asked him to make a series of celebrity portraits in place of Robert Capa who found the task unappealing. In the years that followed, Gigli would work with the most famous magazines such as Time, Paris Match, Sports Illustrated, The Saturday Evening Post, Colliers, and photograph the likes of Sophia Loren, Anita Ekberg, John F. Kennedy, Marlene Dietrich, Louis Armstrong etc. In the early 1950s, Gigli’s success with LIFE enabled him to open his own studio in Manhattan in 1954.
