I’ve been noodling on this thought for a while, and it’s been bothering me enough to ask here—what do you think? 🤔
While driving, I sometimes tune into local Hindi/Punjabi/Urdu radio 🎙️. It’s great for catching local topics and lively debates, BUT here’s what gets me:
Many hosts casually refer to Canada as “paraya desh” (foreign land) or “begana mulak” (alien country)—all while broadcasting from Canada.
👉 These aren’t slip-ups; they’re deliberate 🎯 choices of words by the hosts to try to tickle listener emotions.
Why are these folks who are thriving in Canada and broadcasting in Canada call this a foreign land. As someone who immigrated here and proudly calls Canada home 🍁, I find this narrative dismissive, disingenous, and disrespectful.
Am I the only one who feels this way? Or do others find this odd too?
🌏 Living in the Past or Embracing the Present? 🍁
Like everything in life, if we keep living in the past, how can we truly be present? 🕰️
💭 It’s time for the Canadian immigrant community to reflect: You can feel nostalgia for where you came but your committement, loyalty and respect needs to be with Canada
