قال الحافظ ابن رجب: كرم الخَلْقِ عند الله بالتقوى، فَرُبَّ من يحقره الناس لضعفه وقلة حظه مِنَ الدُّنيا، وهو أعظم قدرًا عند الله تعالى ممن له قدر في الدُّنيا، فإنَّ النَّاسَ إنَّما يتفاوتون بحسب التقوى، كما قال الله تعالى: ﴿إِنَّ أَكْرَمَكُمْ عِندَ اللَّهِ أَنْقَنَكُمْ ، وسئل النَّبِيُّ : مَنْ أَكْرِمُ النَّاسِ؟ قال: «أَتْقَاهُمْ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ". وفي حديث آخر: الْكَرَمُ التَّقْوَى ، والتَّقوى أصلها في القلب، كما قال تعالى: ﴿وَمَن يُعَظِّمْ شَعَائِرَاللَّهِ فَإِنَّهَا مِن تَقْوَى الْقُلُوبِ﴾ [الحج : ٣٢].
