Once, someone asked him, "Shaykh, what is the ruling on shaving the beard?" He understood the intention of the questioner and replied, "I do not want to combine two bad actions—shaving the beard and lying about Allah."
Shaykh Tantawi said that shaving the beard is haram and further added, "I pray to Allah to grant me the ability to grow it." By the grace of Allah, before his death, he was blessed with the ability to grow his beard.
